Murieta's Trades
A circular route exploring the traditional trades of Murieta, taking in lime kilns, charcoal kilns, sheep farming and the landscapes of the Sierra de Lokiz.
We begin the circular route at Murieta Town Hall, the former station of the Basque-Navarre Railway. This route aims to give us an insight into the traditional trades of Murieta, such as lime production, coal mining and sheep farming.
First, we head north to visit two lime kilns: Juan Esteban’s and a reconstruction of a traditional lime kiln, where we can learn how lime was produced. A little further on, we come to the Balsa de Murieta, which offers a glimpse of the area’s flora and fauna.
We continue uphill along a wide track to the Tirillas quarry, from which material was extracted for the construction of the Basque-Navarre infrastructure.
Afterwards, a narrow path takes us to the Asensio sheepfold and the remains of an old shepherd’s hut. We begin our descent, passing by a reconstruction of a charcoal kiln and then the Roya pond.
Finally, we come to a crossroads, which gives us the option of returning to Murieta via the short version of the ‘Ruta de los Oficios’, or continuing along the long route, skirting the Sierra de Lokiz via paths and tracks that lead us to the Gogorra viewpoint, with stunning views of the Ega Valley. Finally, we join the Vasco Navarro Greenway to return to Murieta.
