The Prisoners' Route
A circular route through Ayegui and Montejurra, the setting for the Carlist Wars, passing through Irache and the Way of St James.
The circular route starts at the Ayegui (Ardantze) motorhome site. We head south along the tarmac road, cross the NA-1110 and reach the winery and the Monastery of Irache. At this point, we join the Way of St James. On reaching Irache, we pass under the A-12 and head along a wide track towards the foothills of Montejurra. We skirt part of the northern slope of this iconic mountain and climb uphill until we reach the viewpoint overlooking Estella.
After the viewpoint, we leave the Camino de las Cruces to one side and walk beneath the rugged terrain of Montejurra. We pass the turn-off for the Camino de los Gudaris and, at Hoya de la Cal, head downhill to rejoin the Camino de Santiago. Finally, we return along this route to the starting point of the walk, on the outskirts of Ayegui.
